Jihan Sherman RA, NCARB, LEED AP

I am an architect, designer, and artist based in Atlanta, Georgia. My work explores notions of design, culture and materiality – asking how we understand ourselves and how that understanding informs our artifacts, spaces and stories. Currently, I am a PhD student in Digital Media at Georgia Institute of Technology. My research examines design through Black feminist thought and feminist technoscience, with a particular focus on liberation and care in design-craft methods, for creating futures that confront historical transgressions, engage present bias and harm, and imagine progressive futures. My work spans design disciplines, questioning more broadly how we make with the world around us and how design and technology negotiate social, political, cultural, and material relations.

I hold a Master of Architecture and BS in Architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology. Additionally, I previously worked with Lord Aeck Sargent’s Historic Preservation studio where I contributed to award winning projects such as the restoration of Hardman Farms in Helen, GA and the rehabilitation of the Hinman Building at Georgia Tech. I have taught design studios at Georgia Tech and Kennesaw State University, spanning topics exploring fundamental design principles, parametric form generation, materiality, urban form, community and place making. Additionally, I served as the curriculum coordinator of the Common First Year (CFY) in the College of Architecture (now the College of Design) at Georgia Tech, supporting a curriculum redesign facilitating inter-disciplinary learning and a design-build project.
