Cities have long been understood as complex systems, with even the earliest of them employing relatively intricate strategies of organization. In modern cities, many components of these systems are hidden to the urban dweller, buried beneath the surface. As Above, So Below: Urban Markings is an exploration of these instances. In particular, it seeks to capture the moments when the buried systems of infrastructure are temporarily revealed – marked to set the guidelines for new components or modifications. These markings expose the hidden complexity that lies beneath the smooth concrete surfaces upon which the urban pedestrian walks, revealing the depth of the “ground” that supports the city.
As Above, So Below: Urban Markings is a photographic collection of 25 of these markings along the streets of Chicago, IL.
